Our tutor team
Stuart Hocknell
Stuart became a schoolmaster when he retired from the Royal Air Force after 35 years’ service. He was vice principal of an independent 6th form college in Cambridge before joining SA国际传媒 Cambridge in 2011. He was educated at Swansea Grammar School, RAF College Cranwell and the universities of Cardiff, Bristol, Southampton and Cambridge.
He trained as an electronic engineer. He was decorated in 1985 for services to flying training and in 1999 for his contribution to the reform of the public services. Stuart teaches Physics and Mathematics and is an assistant A level examiner in Physics for one of the examination boards. He enjoys preparing candidates for the British Physics Olympiad competitions and the university admissions tests in Physics, Engineering and Natural Sciences.
Maria Manrique
Maria holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Imperial College. Previously she studied in Barcelona, Munich and Paris and her first degree is in Engineering.
After working in Research and Development for more than ten years, Maria started to teach Mathematics and Physics part-time at SA国际传媒. Then she moved on to teach full time Maths and Further Maths and is currently Head of Science. In recent years she has been in charge of supporting students to prepare for Mathematics admission tests, including STEP, MAT, TMUA and CTMUA.
Tony Marriott
Tony is Head of Business and Economics at a leading independent school for girls in Hertfordshire. He has taught Business and Economics since 2014 and has been a senior examiner since 2017. He has a BA degree in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE) from University of Hull, a MSc in East Asian Business from University of Sheffield, and a PGCE from the Institute of Education, UCL. His research interests include microeconomics, the price mechanism, and East Asian Economic Development since WW2.
Tony has been preparing students for Oxbridge applications since 2015 and has run a series of successful mock Oxbridge interviews. Tony has also been trained by Oxford and Cambridge on university applications.
James Underwood
James leads the Masters in Education at the University of Northampton as well as a range of other shorter courses at Masters level. He also supervises doctoral students. James taught for 19 years before becoming a lecturer at the University of Northampton. The majority of this time was in the British state sector, in secondary schools. He was a school leader in the state secondary sector (students aged 11-18) and subsequently of a sixth form college (students aged 16-18).
He completed his doctorate in education at the University of Cambridge. He also worked at the University of Cambridge as an associate lecturer, whilst still teaching in schools and in this role was involved in interviewing undergraduate candidates.
Lorna Ayton
Lorna is our Oxbridge Admissions Coordinator and is eager to share her experience of the admissions and interview process.
She holds a BA, MMath, and PhD in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge, and still works there supervising doctoral students in the Mathematics Department. From 2010-2016 she conducted interviews at various Cambridge Colleges and oversaw their college admissions tests for Mathematics.
Since 2019, Lorna has split her time between the University of Cambridge, and teaching A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, alongside providing support for various admissions tests such as STEP and the TMUA.
