Course Length

The course

The AQA Physics course enables students to: develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding of Physics; develop and learn to apply observational, practical, modelling, enquiry and problem-solving skills, both in the laboratory and in other learning environments; develop their ability to evaluate claims based on Physics through critical analysis of the methodology, evidence and conclusions, both qualitatively and quantitatively.

GCSE Physics is well suited to students who wish to study Physics at A level and beyond. A qualification in Physics is ideal for students considering careers in Engineering, Medical Physics and any type of fundamental scientific research.

What skills do I need?

You will need a curiosity to learn about the natural world and a desire to gain insight into how science works and of its relevance to everyday lives. Investigative, mathematical and English language skills will all be necessary to achieve highly in this subject.

How is the course assessed?

There are two written examinations, each accounting for 50% of your marks and each of 1 hour 45 minutes duration. Both papers consist of multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and open response type questions.

Paper 1听will assess: Energy; Electricity; Particle model of matter; and Atomic structure.

Paper 2听will assess: Forces; Waves; Magnetism and electromagnetism; and Space physics. Questions in Paper 2 may draw on an understanding of energy changes and transfers due to heating, mechanical and electrical work and the concept of energy conservation from Energy and Electricity.
